Between Ruifang Station and Shuangxi Station lie nine tunnels, giving rise to the well-known Taiwanese saying “passing through nine tunnels with merely a penny”.

Among these tunnels, four have bikeways built within. With a total length of 3.19 km, the Sandiaoling Eco-friendly Tunnel, which is the revival of abandoned Yilan Lane railway for over 30 years. What’s more, it is the first “rebar bikeway”in Taiwan, and the designer of it incorporated a pond design to illuminate the tunnel’s entrances, creating a stunning and mirror-like reflection that echoes with the verdant mountains of Sandiaoling.

With possibility, you might get a chance to encounter trains during the journey. Considering safety for two-way traffic between Sanguatsu tunnel and the wall-hanging bridge, cyclists are required to dismount and walk with their bikes through this pathway.
As the newest route in the low-carbon travel initiative of Route 2 Taiwan, the Sandiaoling Tunnel Bikeway and Sanguatsu Tunnel Bikeway connect the tourism routes of Mudan in Shuangxi and Sandiaoling in Ruifang district.

To mitigate traffic impacts caused by the limited space within the tunnels, visitors are required to apply for entry in advance via online platform (click here to visit). Along the route, interpretation boards highlight the features of this area, and visitors may also make reservations for tour guides through the reservation website.

Admission rules:

In order to maintain the balance between ecology and tourism, the admission rules of Sandiaoling Eco-friendly Tunnel have been adjusted since August 29, 2023.

Each day except Monday, we provide 8 time slots for 160 visitors to reserve in each; in other words, the maximum number is 1280 visitors for each day.

It is necessary for every visitors to follow the rules below:
•Entry date of the tunnel should be reserved online.

•The earliest reservation date is 14 days before the “visit date”, which means to subtract 13 days from the reservation date gives the earliest reservation date. For instance, if the scheduled entry date is the 14th of the month, reservations will available from the noon on the 1st of the month.

•The latest reservation dates depend on if there are still vacancies on the “visit date”. However, reservations are impossible to be made if the entry time for the day has passed; for example, reservations for 13:30 on the same day cannot be made after 08:30 to 11:30; in contrast, reservations for the previous time slot of the day may still possible to be made, such as reservations at 13:31 for entry from 12:30 to 13:30 on the same day.

•Reservation check-in locations: 
Mudan Information Station, Shuangxi District (Sandiaoling Eco-friendly Tunnel Mileage 0K+800), and Hou San Road in Ruifang District (Sandiaoling Eco-friendly Tunnel Mileage 3K+192).

•On-site guided tours: 
There are guided tours at 9:00 and 14:00 at the Mudan Information Station. If a guided tour is required, please apply for the previous mentioned time slots and check the option that demands for a guided tour.

•Opening hours: 8:30 to 16:30 (last entry for visitors is at 16:00).

•The surface of this area's roads is made of reinforced steel and there are gaps on the surface. Please walk and ride bicycles with carefulness and keep your personal belongings such as phones and keys with you to avoid losses.

•The area is closed every Monday; regardless, it remains open on holidays and consecutive public holidays. Entry is not permitted during announced closures due to other factors such as suspensions of work or classes announced by the government.
