Introduction

After the sealing off of this centuries old mine since 1959, it has seen daylight again with reconstruction from hearty locals. The Gaidankent coal mine boasts of the greatest production among mines beneath the mountain (Zhanjijiao) at the time. After the Japanese took control of Taiwan, Zhanjijia station was built due to the resources from Gaidanken coal mine for exclusive coal transportation use. There were over thousands of people here during the height of Gaidankeng production.

Jiufen Visitor Center

There is a large map with trilingual introductions at the back of the reception counter, marking some main tourist attractions and their relevant locations within the Shuei-Jin-Jiou (Shueinandong, Jinguashih, Jiufen) regions.A few to-scale handcar models from the past are displayed indoors, and various types of ores and mining tools from the Shuei-Jin-Jiou regions in the past are exhibited on each handcar, making it a mini museum. Posters on the walls applied trilingual explanations to briefly introduce the developmental history of Jiufen region in phases. Souvenir stamp collection service is also available on the table. The pamphlets displayed here are printed in multiple languages, providing thorough yet easy to understand introductions according to the different tourist attractions and regions, which often include exquisitely printed brief maps, making it one of the most accessed printed data to visitors.

Yuantong Temple

One of northern Taiwan’s most famed niji temples, or nunneries, Yuantong is a diverse religious center featuring traditional Japanese elements, western culture, and traditional Taiwanese architecture. It is simple yet stately. The temple was founded in 1926 and received a major addition in 1982 when a library specializing in Buddhist studies was built.
