Introduction

"Daluolan" is derived from the Atayal word "Tranan". The abundant headwaters are the lifeline of Tranan Tribe."

The Daluolan (Tranan) Ancient Canal Trail is also referred to as the Fushan Maan Ancient Canal Trail. The term "Daluolan" is derived from the Atayal word "Tranan", signifying the convergence of two rivers. The ancestors of the Atayal people traversed the mountains from Baling in Taoyuan to this area for hunting and stumbled upon abundant headwaters and fertile soil. This discovery led them to relocate here, marking the initial settlement of the Atayal people in Wulai. Adorned with greenery along both banks, the Daluolan (Tranan) River is known as the lifeline of the Tranan Tribe. Its canal is sometimes narrow and at other times expansive. With fish leisurely swimming in its crystal-clear waters, it has a scenery that is astonishingly picturesque.

During the period of Japanese domination, the irrigation canal was excavated to meet agricultural needs, introducing water from the Daluolan River to the tribes for farming purposes. Despite the gradual obsolescence of this irrigation canal with the introduction of piped water, it still continues to flow endlessly. Enveloped in the shade of verdant trees, the trail is adorned with towering old trees lining both sides. This not only crafts a paradise for diverse animals and plants but also establishes an authentic ecological corridor. The ancient canal was built along the contour of the mountainside. The Daluolan River is situated in the valley and can occasionally be glimpsed through the openings in the forest. The elevated observation platform provides visitors with an exceptional vantage point to admire the river flowing among rugged and scattered rocks in the valley, creating a scene of indescribable beauty.
