Introduction

Bitan Weir is a vital water conservancy project in the middle and upper reaches of the Xindian River. Built in the 18th century, the first generation of Bitan Weir was part of the Liugongjun, a critical water conservancy project in Taipei and New Taipei during the Qing Dynasty. This weir also created the lake and mountain scenery of the upstream Bitan Scenic Area. However, Typhoon Soudelor severely damaged Bitan Weir in 2015. The Water Resources Department of the New Taipei City Government promoted the "Bitan Weir Improvement and Surrounding Environment Construction Project" to reconstruct the damaged Bitan Weir. The department also set up the Bitan Fishway on the right bank of the weir, allowing migratory organisms in the Xindian River to sail upstream to the river's upper reaches to live.

Open up the ecological corridor of the river that has been interrupted for half a century.
More than 60 kinds of fish, shrimp, and crabs are in the waters downstream of Bitan Weir. Among them are more than 30 kinds of river and sea migratory creatures, such as the famous sweetfish, rock flagtail, mullet, eriocheir hepuensis, and other aquatic animals. Bitan Weir specially set up an ecological fishway on the right side during the renovation to maintain the environmental diversity of the Xindian River. The fishway adopts the form of a vertical trough inclined partition wall pool, arranged in three rows and four turns, with a total of 62 partition walls. At the same time, five rest pools help the creatures cross Bitan Weir.

Fishway Ecological Observation Window
The Water Resources Department completed the renovation of the Bitan Weir in July 2023. the department designed the new weir as a composite weir, with an inverted weir in the middle of the river and fixed weirs on both sides connecting the embankment. It can increase the water depth of the Bitan water area by 50 cm and control the water level of Bitan between 12 and 12.5 meters. The fishway observation platform on the right side of the Bitan Weir connects to the bicycle path on the right bank of the Xindian River and a transparent ecological observation window in the middle of the fishway, which is like an aquarium viewing experience, where you can enjoy the migrating fish in the fishway. Also, the department set up an underwater camera to broadcast live on the Internet to record the fantastic ecological scenes in the Xindian River.

Red Castle

Tamsui's Red Castle is a beautiful building erected in 1899. It is embraced on three sides with a red brick corridor. Situated within sight of Tamsui River, it offers an extremely expansive ocean vista that attracts lovers of photography. The three-story Red Castle has a Chinese restaurant on ﬁrst ﬂoor, a gallery of photos showing Tamsui through the years on second ﬂoor and a café on third ﬂoor.
