The sand at Fulong Beach is made of quartz. Quartz has great malleability after being mixed in water. Fulong Beach is therefore recognized by the World Sand Sculpting Academy as the perfect place for sand sculpture in Taiwan. Both domestic and foreign sand sculptors are invited to have artistic exchanges concerning professional sand sculpture and together create amazing works for the Sand Sculpture Festival. The two-month festival has exhibitions of sand sculptures, competitions of creative sand sculpture and parent-child DIY sand sculpture. The festival each year attracts a lot of tourists for visits and photo shoots and in 2011 the number of visitors was over 350,000 person-time, which was a record for the festival. The International Sand Sculpture Festival is now one of the major tourism activities in the northeast area every summer.
