Introduction
Towards the end of the 1960's, Ruifang and the nearby Houtong area were prosperous mining towns. The 1st-generation boss of "Feng Wei Pork thick soup" came from Sandiaoling and decided to settle down in Ruifang. Utilizing his culinary skills garnered from a stint in a big city hotel, he saw the potential of pork thick soup in the Ruifang market. In the beginning, most of his customers were miners, and after several adjustments to his recipe, he now makes the very famous Feng Wei Pork thick soup well-received by locals and foreigners.Thinking back about the mining industry, the elder boss and his wife have many memories to share. The elder boss had relatives who were miners; he settled down at a foreign land but managed to set up shop in a premium location. His first batch of customers was mostly miners. He reminisced that his miner customers would sit in the long bench in front of his stall to enjoy his pork thick soup while waiting for their bus. Amidst the eating, all of them had the same sentiment: I enter the mines today, will I get out of the mines safely?
